PNS x Zavala: Canciones Modernas
Canciones Modernas brings together two of Chicago’s most talented hip hop
producers, PNS and Zavala. On this split LP each producer provides five
exclusive instrumental tracks. PNS, of Chicago’s legendary Molemen, opens
with “2012”, an apocalyptic boom bap head-nodder with cuts by DJ Pratt.
The PNS produced “Nueva Frontera”, “Prelude to Audiotronics, and ”Lenky di Don”
are all certified street bangers in PNS’ classic style. “Retina of the Mind‘s Eye (1983)”
closes the PNS side combining sci-fi/horror samples and a raw drum break into a
hypnotic instrumental ready for the toughest of Chi streets.
Zavala, the next heavy-weight producer from Chicago, delivers a slamming side of
five well composed instrumentals that transition seamlessly from the first beat
to the last. “The City is Mine” begins with a slew of cuts and samples by DJ Pratt
and moves quickly into a heavily orchestrated David Axelrod-like composition combining
strings and synthesizers with propulsive drums. Zavala’s Bollywood samples
inspired “Mal Momento”, “Devon Ave.” and “Sin Esfuerzo”, influenced by classic
hip hop and Chicago house, showcases his versatility in melding eclectic sources
into a trademark “Zavala sound”. “Cincinatti Bears” closes the side with Zavala’s
SP-1200 sound, propelled by his heavy drum sequencing .
Scheme started shooting his video for "Respect the Art" off The Manifesto EP directed by Virgil Solis from RubyHornet.com Slugs came thru and do a piece for the video.

New York, NY – November 24, 2009 – Chi-Town takes over MTV Jams on Friday, November 27 with “Chicago Day” featuring videos from the hottest artists including Kanye West, Common, Jennifer Hudson, Lupe Fiasco, and many more. “Chicago Day” will also focus on showcasing talent from the underground music scene. MTV Jams partnered with Fake Shore Drive, Chicago’s #1 hip hop blog, to find some of the city’s up and coming new artists including Rhymefest, GLC, Ben One, Skooda Chose, and Scheme.
“Chicago Day” on MTV Jams marks a pivotal point in Chicago hip hop history, by not only showcasing national talent, but also by giving up and coming and independent artists the chance to shine alongside of them,” says Andrew Barber, founder of Fake Shore Drive.com.
“Chicago Day” will also look inside the music of the city and focus on the philanthropic efforts of those dedicated to making the city a safer place for inner city youth. MTV News VJ, Sway and one of hip hops finest; David Banner hit the streets to talk to the people of Chicago. David Banner also talks with Sway about his “Heal the Hood” Organization, which is dedicated to stopping the violence that is plaguing the city. Sway also sits down with George Daniels, Godfather of Chicago music to talk about how the music in the city has evolved.
MTV Jams partnered with Chicago-based Mid-C Media to shoot all of the interview footage.
Tune into MTV Jams on Friday, November 27 as “Chicago Day” gives viewers access to new as well as classic videos from some of the hottest artists from Chi-Town.
Scheme and the Sound Merchants (Chicago production crew consisting of brothers CB & 21 Grams) create a great piece from beginning to end. They enlist Jean Grae, Astonish, Tone Pro, and Wes Restless to bring a touch of their own style into this well crafted EP.
